Bay laurel is an evergreen tree with berries that grows up to 64 ft or 20 m tall. It grows native to the mediterranean region. It is especially cultivated for its berries in France, Spain, Italy, Morocco, former Yugoslavia, China, Israel, Turkey, and Russia. The essential oil is largely produced in former Yugoslavia.
The leaves were used in by the ancient Greeks and Romans to crown their victors. Historically the leaves and berries have been used for various afflictions such as colic, fever, hysteria, indigestion, loss of appetite, and to help promote menstruation. It is not to be used internally nowadays because of the narcotic effects. The essential oil of bay laurel, extracted from the berries, is used by many people today for sprains, bruises, and earaches.

I had excruciating arthritis in my hand and a “trigger finger” for about half-a year. I woke up every morning in pain. It was suggested that I mix 6 drops of bay laurel oil in a tablespoon of olive oil and and rub the mixture on the arthritic joints for a few minutes five times a day. After about two and a half weeks there was a significant drop in pain. After a month the pain was gone and there was no trigger finger. I kept on rubbing the mixture on for a few weeks and then stopped. It has been almost three years and the pain and trigger finger are a memory. Every once in awhile I start feeling some stiffness and mild pain in my fingers and I rub the mixture in for 2-3 days and then even the minimal pain and stiffness are gone. The relief is hard to believe. – Don B.
This is a wonderful oil for helping you fall asleep or if you’re having trouble with insomnia. It has a very nice, calming scent. I use it with a couple of other oils in a diffuser at night and it really helps me sleep better and I feel really rested. Some of the oils I use with it are Lavender, Marjoram, Orange and Clary Sage. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a better night’s sleep. – Janice S.
This is my favorite oil! It smells like heaven to me. It is so strong and clean, much like fresh cut grass! This oil is very helpful for clearing lungs and I apply it on my chest. It’s great for putting in a personal steam inhaler for cold season. I use it to cleanse the emotions when I’m feeling overwhelmed and also in times where grief comes up. – Gina W.
This oil is great for stimulating the lymphatic system which helps clean out toxins from the body! This is a very high quality and powerful oil, you must dilute it before putting it on your skin. – Becca H.
